Sonia Ekweremadu breaks silence after her parents are imprisoned for 10 years

Sonia, the daughter of a former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, has spoken about her parents’ ordeal in the UK. On Friday, Ekweremadu was sentenced to 9 years and eight months. His wife Beatrice and Dr Obinna Obetta got four years and ten years of jail terms, respectively. The sentence became the first of its kind under the Modern Slavery Act, following their conviction for organ trafficking in March, which lasted for six weeks. Prior to the sentence, Ekweremadu, Beatrice and Obeta were convicted of conspiracy to arrange the travel of a young Nigerian man identified as David Nwamini to Britain in order to exploit him for his kidney. The kidney organ was intended for Ekweremadu’s sick daughter, Sonia. Speaking to BBC on Friday, Sonia said she was devastated, and broken and disagrees with the conviction. “It’s sad. It’s been really hard to wrap my head around it. I understand the conviction. Personally, I disagree with it; however, that’s from a very biased perspective as their daughter, and I would obviously back my parents. “However, the law has taken its course, and we just have to now move forward as a family.”
