Omoyele Sowore, others granted bail

Omoyele Sowore, a Nigerian activist, former presidential candidate, and editor of Sahara Reporters, has been granted bail by the Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Abuja for an amount of N20m. Four other activists, arrested on New Year’s Eve in Abuja with Sowore for conducting a protest for bad governance, were also granted bail of N1m each. They are Juwon Sanyaolu, Emmanuel Bulus, Peter Williams, and Damilare Adenola. The court, chaired by Mabel Segun-Bello, awarded N20 million bail and two sureties in the same amount to the Sahara Reporters publisher. A federal civil servant not below grade level 12 must be one of the sureties. Although Sowore’s counsel, Marshal Abubakar, ruled on the bail application, the Chief Magistrate, Mabel Segun-Bello, ruled that the sureties must remain in the metropolis of Abuja with landed property and established addresses. One of the bail conditions is that Sowore must physically report every Monday and Friday to the registrar of the Federal Capital Territory High Court pending the determination of the case against him. However, it is not expected that he will travel beyond Abuja and the country.
