END SARS protest continue despite dissolution, youths make new demand

Nigerian Youths have continued protests against the gross human rights abuse, including extrajudicial killings, intimidation, and harassment of citizens, by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad. This is coming after the dissolution of the SARS unit by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, on Sunday. In a counter-response to the IGP directive, the protesters made five demands. The demands include 1) Immediate release of all arrested protesters 2) Justice for all deceased victims of police brutality and appropriate compensation for their families 3) Setting up and independent body to oversee the investigation and prosecution of all reports of police misconduct (within 10 days) 4) In line with the new police act, psychological evaluation and retraining (to be confirmed by an independent body) of all disbanded SARS before they can redeployed 5) Increase police salary so that they are adequately compensated for protecting lives and property of citizens. Kemi Filani News reports that while some of the protesters have blocked the Lekki Tollgate this morning as seen in the video below, some others are mobilizing for a massive protest on Tuesday 13 October 2020, unless the President addresses them. Meanwhile, the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi, has challenged the #EndSARS protesters to channel their energy into kicking against ritual killing, cultism, and other social vices in the land. The Oluwo spoke on Sunday in response to calls on Instagram that he should lend royal in support of the protests. The monarch said the ritual killing was deadlier and more devastating to the youth than SARS could be. Oba Akanbi, who lamented the increasing cases of ritual killings, said it was disappointing that despite the high level of crime in the land, Nigerians had not protested against ritual killings.
